Motorist drove into cyclist twice

-

A CYCLIST thought he was “going to be killed” when an impatient motorist drove into him twice while trying to pass him on a narrow road.

Jeffrey Young, 48, shouted at Ian Edward and used his Peugeot to push him towards the kerb after he became incensed about the cyclist riding in the middle of the road.

Mr Edward was riding from Porthcawl to North Cornelly, in Bridgend, at about 5pm on June 25 last year.

A sentencing hearing at Cardiff Crown Court heard Mr Edward was riding along Heol Fach when he approached a bridge under the M4 which causes the road to narrow. As he approached this point he positioned his bike in the middle of the road to prevent cars from overtaking him until he could return to the side of the wider road safely.

Prosecutor Paul Hewitt told the court Young drove up behind Mr Edward and became “impatient”.

Mr Hewitt added: “The vehicle connected with the bike and pushed him closer to the kerb, having got to the side of him and turned the car towards him and forcing him into the kerb a second time and hit him in the leg. The car shot off at speed.”

Young pleaded guilty to dangerous driving.

Defence barrister Stuart John said his client had suffered with mental health issues throughout his life.

Judge Daniel Williams sentenced Young, of Heol Onnen, North Cornelly, to 34 weeks’ imprisonment and he was disqualified from driving for two years and the duration of his sentence. He was also ordered to pay £95.97 in compensation.
