Seven cup finals ahead for defending champions

-

THE New Saints return to JD Cymru Premier action against Barry Town United this evening in the first of seven cup finals for the under pressure defending champions.

One point from three games since the split has seen Scott Ruscoe’s men slip four points behind rivals Connah’s Quay Nomads in the title race and has put their bid for ninth straight crown in serious jeopardy.

TNS, though, did return to winning ways in emphatic fashion last weekend, storming into a 4-0 halftime lead and running out eventual 6-1 victors over Newtown to reach the Welsh Cup semi-finals.

And Ruscoe will demand a similar display tonight against a Barry side who have already won at Park Hall this season. Evan Press’ goal was the difference in a 1-0 win for Barry the first phase back in September.

On the latest clash, and the rest of the campaign, Ruscoe said: “We’re wary of Barry, they’re very good in possession and have got some excellent players whatever formation they play.

“The players know how tough the game will be, but also what needs to be done. If we start in the same manner that we did against Newtown then I think we’ll be fine.

“We believe that we’ve got everything needed to win seven games in a row – and that’s not taking anything away from the opposition.

“When things go against you, big players come to the fore and there’s plenty of big players in that dressing room.”

The game, which kicks off at 8pm is being televised live on S4C.

It’s very much advantage Connah’s Quay as things stand as they gear up tonight’s tough trip to Bala Town as third meets first.

The Nomads will be looking to shake off their Welsh Cup quarterfinal home exit by Cardiff Met last weekend and maintain their grip on top spot.

Elsewhere, Caernarfon Town host

Newtown, while there are also two matches in the Play-Off Conference this evening.

Penybont can climb out of the bottom two – temporarily at least – if they bag at least a point at home against Cardiff Met.

Meanwhile, Cefn Druids, who are a point behind Met in the race for the final European play-off spot, welcome Aberystwyth Town to the Rock.

Then, tomorrow, Carmarthen Town, who go into the latest round of fixtures out of the bottom two on goal difference, host bottom side Airbus UK Broughton. The Wingmakers are currently four points from safety.
