Swans can make sense of ‘mad’ table – Cabango

-

DEFENDER Ben Cabango says Swansea City can overcome the ‘madness’ of the Skybet Championship and maintain their bid for the play-offs.

The Swans drew 0-0 with West Brom on Saturday and dropped one place in the table, yet moved one point closer to the top six following last weekend’s results.

And Cabango feels Swansea can take the positives from the display when they travel to struggling Middlesbrough on Saturday.

“Overall, we were happy with the result,” said the 19-year-old. “Obviously, West Brom are a quality team and to get a clean sheet against the top-scoring side in the Championship is a bonus.

“With the way the last two games went with conceding stoppage-time goals, it’s good that we saw it through, added Cabango after an 11th clean sheet of the season.

“As a team, I thought we defended really well; we obviously limited them to about three good chances. We also had a lot of chances going the other way, so it’s not like it was a one-sided game. I think a draw was a fair result.”

Cabango knows a good run of results will strengthen the Swans’ play-off push, and he added: “It’s a mad table.

“There are nine games left now so, hopefully, we can get good momentum and push for those play-off places,” said the centre-back.

“We just want to win as many games as possible and get into that play-off spot.

“In the changing room, all of us are confident we can do that. We’ve got enough quality and believe we can go into every game and win.

“Obviously, that wasn’t the case on Saturday but, for every game between now and the end of the season, we feel like the three points are up for grabs.

“Hopefully, we will pick up momentum and get into the play-off places.”

Manager Steve Cooper added: “There’s nine games to go, three points away from getting over the dotted line.

“There are worse places to be. I think about some of the teams who are below us who would do anything to be in the position we are in.

“We are only thinking really positively and we are going for this. We are really going to back ourselves.”

■ The Premier League International Cup quarter-final between Swansea City and Benfica, scheduled for today, has been postponed.

Benfica made the decision not to travel to the UK at this stage, following local health and safety advice to restrict international travelling.

The Premier League will consult with Swansea and Benfica before making a further decision on this fixture.
