University’s probe after students’ ‘racist comments in sixth form’
SWANSEA University has launched an investigation following allegations some of its students made highly offensive racist comments in a group chat while they were in sixth form, reportedly about a fellow rugby team member.
The series of deeply offensive terms emerged in a Twitter thread in which a student anonymously shared their experience of racism in school, according to student news website The Tab.
An image of the group chat conversation, which the Western Mail has decided not to publish, shows a number of derogatory racist comments made about a person.
It was said to have been shared widely online with universities where those claimed to have been involved were currently studying, tagged in.
The Swansea University students involved are reported by The Tab as being members of a university rugby team.
One of the students said to be under investigation is quoted by The Tab as saying they were responsible for one “disgusting” comment in the chat.
They are quoted: “100% what I said was wrong and disgusting, I should not have said it. Likewise, one word in a group chat from years ago certainly does not reflect who I am as a person.
“Since then I have rectified the issue.”
A spokesman for Swansea University said: “We have launched an investigation and a disciplinary process has now commenced. With the disciplinary process underway, we cannot comment any further.”
The university’s rugby club have also been asked for comment.
