ABODYBUILDER died after taking drugs including cocaine, an inquest heard yesterday.

In November 2019 tributes poured in after it was announced Sebastian Marcin Kakol had been found dead at his home in Cathays, Cardiff.

Mr Kakol, 39, originally from Poland, had competed in and won a Mr UK competition just days earlier.

An inquest held at Pontypridd Coroners’ Court was told “choking” noises were heard coming from his flat before he died.

A statement was read on behalf of Shane Collins, who lived in the same block of flats as Mr Kakol in Woodville Road.

Reading the statement coroner Geraint Williams told the hearing Mr Kakol had lived in the area for approximately 10 years.

Summarising the statement provided by the neighbour, Mr Williams said: “On November 4, 2019, I heard a lady’s voice attend the flat at two o’clock in the afternoon and he heard the voice for about an hour and heard movement in Mr Kakol’s flat for most of the day.”

Describing what was heard during the early hours of the following morning, Mr Williams continued: “[Mr Collins] heard what he would describe as scraping for around three or four minutes and coughing and choking for around 10 minutes and nothing else. He remembers going to sleep and waking up the following morning.”

When Mr Collins woke up the next day he could hear a buzzer for Mr Kakol’s flat but there was no response. The neighbour went to the flat and called for help but Mr Kakol was later pronounced dead.

A pathology report carried out by Dr Thomas Hockey revealed various drugs were found in Mr Kakol’s system including cocaine, insulin, tamoxifen, and clomifene.

Some of these substances were described as being “unusual” findings as clomifene is a medication prescribed to women who do not ovulate in order to treat infertility while tamoxifen is a medication used to treat and prevent breast cancer. The medical cause of death was given as cocaine toxicity.

Mr Williams said: “The circumstances are simply Sebastian Marcin Kakol had ingested cocaine and was found dead at his flat on November 5, 2019.

“I am content with all these findings and conclude that Mr Kakol died as a result of the abuse of drugs.”

In the aftermath of his death last year Mr Kakol’s brother, Michal Kakol, paid tribute to a “beloved son, brother, and uncle”.

He said: “A person of big heart who will be missed and never forgotten by his family and friends.

“On behalf of our family we would like to thank you for your kind words and support in this difficult time. This is a sudden loss to our family and our hearts are bleeding.

“Sebastian lived in Cardiff for the last 12 years where he found this city to be his second home. Here he developed his passion of bodybuilding and achieved his first successes.

“However, Sebastian’s heart belongs to the Polish land and this is where we hope he will find eternal peace. We are taking Sebastian to

Poland, his home, where he will be buried in his family’s grave.

“This sudden loss of Sebastian is painful to our family.”
