We’ve got to find a killer instinct, admits Bennett

SCOT Bennett has called on Newport County to find a killer instinct or risk seeing their League Two promotion dream go up in smoke.

Mike Flynn’s Exiles host Crawley Town tonight desperate for a win after failing to score for their last two games. County have dropped to seventh and are clinging to a play-off place.

Last Saturday they were beaten 1-0 by Cambridge United. County have five games to play and Bennett – who has impressed in defence and midfield recently – knows it’s time to deliver.

“We are creating chances. I don’t know whether it’s just that we aren’t gambling enough or we aren’t getting enough bodies in the box,” he said. “If we could get that right then I am sure we would pick up more points, so it’s something we’ve got to sort out.

“It’s still in our hands and we’ve got five massive games. We’ve got to start taking points.

“There is no lack of confidence. We got the ball down and played some nice stuff against Cambridge and created chances, but we just have to start taking them.

“It’s frustrating because we played some excellent football. We have got to start killing teams off.

“We have definitely played a lot worse than we did on Saturday and still come away with something but we’ve got to go again against Crawley and we’ve got to get a win.”

County’s play-off hopes won’t die if they fail to beat Crawley, but they really need to take three points because they then travel to Bennett’s former side Exeter on Saturday.

Exeter are currently just a point below County. Manager Flynn isn’t sure if he’ll have key man Matty Dolan back for Crawley after his head injury forced him to miss the Cambridge match.

Bennett added: “We are still clinging on in there, but we’ve got to start taking care of our own business and stop relying on others.

“That’s why we are so frustrated. There has been a chance to keep climbing, but every time we seem to go wrong ourselves. We have to sort that out and start taking care of our own business.

“It’s going to be another tough game against Crawley and no game in this league is easy. The last few weeks have all been massive. We would have liked a lot more points, but now we have two teams around us and we need them now.

“Exeter have a big game against Forest Green so that might mean we can open up a gap if we beat Crawley going into Saturday. It’s exciting – it’s all in our hands and we have five massive games.”
