Hats off to Robinson for his incredible bowling performance – Maynard

-

GLAMORGAN head coach Matthew Maynard remained upbeat despite the eight-wicket LV= County Championship defeat against Sussex at Sophia Gardens.

Maynard conceded that the only real difference between the two teams was the ‘incredible individual display’ from Sussex seamer Ollie Robinson, who returned match figures of 13/138 in the Cardiff sunshine.

“Every now and then you take your hat off to an incredible individual display, Ollie Robinson certainly did that and it was as good a bowling display as I’ve seen in county cricket for a long time, it was the difference between the sides,” said Maynard.

Maynard maintains there were plenty of positives to take from the match and was delighted with the fight his batters showed, in particular Kiran Carlson who scored twin hundreds in the match and Callum Taylor who soaked up 251 balls for his 84 in the second innings.

“I was delighted with the fight we showed with the bat, Carlson with two hundreds in the game, the start Lloyd gave us in an unfamiliar position, Douthwaite playing out of character and Callum as well,” added Maynard.

“A lot of pleasing performances including the way Hogan led the attack in his hundredth game, a lot more positives than negatives in the game.

“There won’t be too many changes for Northampton unless there are injuries (from this game).

“Ruaidhri Smith (hamstring) will be a while yet, and Jamie McIlroy will be out for six to eight weeks with a stress fracture of the rib.”

Meanwhile, double centurion Carlson reflected on a memorable four days personally.

“It is nice to have personal milestones, but it never gets easier losing,” said Carlson.

“I think it is just important for us to take the positives from this week and move on to Northamptonshire.

“There has been a bit of technical stuff, a bit of mindset shift, that’s it really, just trying to go out there with a clear head.

“As a team there were a few good things.

“If we can just stick to our process we can definitely get a result [at Northampton] and I think it is one of those things that we just need to stick with it this season and the results will come.”

Glamorgan’s four-day encounter in Northampton gets under on Thursday morning.
