Police issue new image of man who could be key witness
POLICE have launched their third appeal for the public’s help in identifying a possible witness after a man’s death sparked a murder investigation.
Dr Gary Jenkins, 54, sustained serious injuries following an alleged attack in Bute Park, Cardiff, in the early hours of July 20. He later died at the University Hospital of Wales on August 5.
Jason Edwards, 25, Lee William Strickland, 36, both from Cardiff, and a 17-year-old girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, have since been charged with his murder and been remanded in custody. The three have since appeared at Newport Crown Court and have pleaded not guilty to murder, manslaughter, robbery of a bag, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
Detectives have said they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident. But officers have made an appeal to identify a man who may have information, which they say could assist the investigation team in their inquiries.
An appeal to trace the man was first made in August. Following further CCTV inquiries, police provided a clearer image of him in September, but his identity still remains unknown.
In the image he is wearing a white shirt, black shorts and black hat, while he also has facial hair and is carrying what appears to be a drinks can.
The senior investigating officer Detective Inspector Stuart Wales, from the South Wales Police Major Crime Investigation Team, said: “We continue to appeal to this male, or anyone who may know his identity to please call South Wales Police, or Crimestoppers anonymously, so that we can speak to him.
“I will stress again that he is a potential witness and has no reason to fear coming forward.
“We need to speak with him about his movements and interactions in Cardiff city centre during the relevant time. We believe he would have been in the vicinity of the top of Queen Street near its junction with St John Street at around 11.30pm on July 19.”
