Family’s tribute to GP and pillar of the community

-

THE family of a loved and respected GP, who died recently, have said they are overwhelmed by the support from his friends and patients.

Dr Gwynfor Evans, 65, had been suffering from a heart condition and passed away surrounded by his loving family on November 12.

The Welsh-speaking GP will be sorely missed within his Conwy community, having been a pillar outside his GP surgery, as well as within.

His family told North-Wales-Live that up until the pandemic he judged the fancy-dress competition at Rowen Carnival, and took part in pantomimes at the village hall – very often taking the lead role.

Additionally, he was a school governor, ran the annual sloe gin competition, and was a champion vegetable grower, regularly winning prizes at shows.

As well as his passion for gardening, he enjoyed cooking, reading and learning, even achieving a law degree in 1991.

Dr Evans is remembered by his widow Marie and their children Sion, Aled and Bethan, who the community have always referred to as “Dr Evans’ children”.

Marie and Dr Evans married in 1990, after meeting on the ward at St Mary’s Hospital in London in the 1970s.

“Gwynfor was a junior doctor and I was a nurse on the ward,” explained Mrs Evans. “I knew he was one of the good ones because with some doctors it was very hard to get them out of bed in the early hours if they were needed, but with Gwynfor it was never a problem, he had so much compassion for his patients.”

Dr Evans’ funeral will take place this Friday at 2pm at Tyn y Groes Chapel. His hearse will pass Gyffin Surgery around 3pm.
