CHAMPIONSHIP REVIEW

-

WINNING is the only word in the dictionary at the moment for Bargoed as they made it six league wins out of six with a routine 26-3 victory over Ystalyfera in the Admiral National Championship.

The Bulls are now seven points clear at the top but they did not have it all their own way.

Ystalyfera put up a defiant showing in the first half and only trailed by four points at half-time.

Ultimately, Bargoed’s attacking flair and conviction was the difference between the two sides in what was the only league match of the weekend.

Ystrad Rhondda claimed a 29-13 away victory over Glamorgan Wanderers to get within touching distance of WRU Championship Cup leaders Bargoed and Neath.

Wanderers head coach Martyn Fowler said: “It was an odd game for us, we were actually pleased with our performance but we didn’t execute our chances.”

Ystrad scored five tries with Carl Williams scoring a brace. Jarred Llewellyn, Jack Foulkes and Kurtis Williams also got on the scoresheet.

The Wanderers are yet to win a game in this season’s Championship Cup and despite putting up a solid display they were left to rue a lot of missed opportunities.

Cardiff Met kept their WRU Championship Plate hopes alive with a hard-fought 29-17 win over second-placed Bedwas.

Director of rugby Danny Milton said: “It was our first game since Christmas and I felt we were a bit rusty in places. But I’m really pleased with the result and I’m looking forward to seeing us continue to improve in 2022.”

The Archers showed good character to bounce back from two consecutive defeats in the Plate and they are now just five points off the top.

Bradley Roderick-Evans kicked 19 points which propelled the university side to victory. Met tries came from Bradley Denty and Oliver Andrews, while the Bedwas try-scorers were James Richards and Lewis Bowden.
