In South Wales a dedicated team of school staff, parents and volunteers is taking an innovative approach to tackling food insecurity – with help from Tesco, FareShare… and you

Tesco is doing its bit to fight hunger at the heart of local communities across Britain this spring with its Buy One to Help A Child campaign.

Every time you buy fresh fruit and veg in-store or at tesco.com from March 21 to April 3, Tesco is pledging to make a donation to FareShare, the charity network it has partnered with for the past decade. This means you’ll be helping vulnerable children and families in your local area.

As the UK’s national network of charitable food distributors, FareShare ensures that good-quality surplus food from businesses, including Tesco, is passed on to more than 10,500 frontline charities and community groups. This results in two million nourishing meals every week going to people in communities across the UK.

Innovative community café and shop Cadog’s Corner in Barry, based in a converted shipping container near Cadoxton Primary School, is one such grassroots organisation supporting lowincome and vulnerable families in a variety of vital ways.

NUTRITIOUS MEALS

These include providing nutritious meals at its pay-as-you-feel shop, as well as food parcels and conducting cooking workshops with children and families, with the majority of food coming from FareShare.

Cadog’s Corner was set up by parents and staff from the school to help address social i solation, improve community wellbeing, reduce food waste and improve food related skills and knowledge. It was initially due to launch in March 2020 – then the first Covid lockdown hit, so the team immediately switched their focus to open Operation Cadog, organising food parcels for families facing food insecurity across Barry, and bringing together local schools in the process.

Two years on, Cadog’s Corner is still supporting isolated people, providing opportunities for volunteering and training, and helping pupils and parents to learn new skills.

Hannah Cogbill, a teacher at Cadoxton Primary and volunteer at Cadog’s Corner, says,

“We’re very grateful to FareShare and Tesco for supporting us and our community. The food we receive makes such a difference to local families.

We’re also here to help make l i nks to other support services in this time of uncertainty. ” Volunteers from Cadoxton and Oakfield Primary schools also turn out every Saturday to support the Cadfield Van. The van visits five locations across Barry where members of the community can pick up a bag of food for a donaHannah adds, “The work that’s being done is really great and all our volunteers love to see the smiling faces of those they’re helping and the difference they are making within their local community.” The p a r t n e r s hi p past decade. FareShare CEO Lindsay Boswell says Tesco’s donation will make a real difference to frontline charities working with children, and thanks Tesco customers for their support.

“The Buy One to Help A Child campaign makes such a difference to us at FareShare in Wales. It helps us support children and families from this area during the school holidays. “Many charities that we work with offer a healthy meal alongside holiday activities, helping children to stay active and stay connected with their friends during these periods. Supporting the needs of children is very important to FareShare as we see what a difference access to healthy food can make in young people’s lives.

“In this, our 10th year of partnership with Tesco, we are very grateful for its ongoing commitment to help FareShare redistribute goodto-eat food to thousands of charities across the UK.”
