Church of God should replace nationalism
HOW sad it was to watch a Russian Orthodox Church service recently and learn that its backing of President Putin was absolute.
Surely it is time to abandon the long-held belief held by nations who claim “my country right or wrong”. Humanists often deny God, knowing only too well that religion has been the cause of so many conflicts, and not too far from home either!
In Wales we are blessed by our Church being dis-established, and how important is the preposition “in” (Church “in” Wales) compared with the “of” (Church “of” England).
To claim, as in England, Italy, Greece, Russia, etc, that religion is theirs to own, then surely we can conclude that the Church of God should replace the narrow nationalism that at present exists.
Religion can be an instrument for good, as the Archbishop of Canterbury proved recently when criticising the government for moral and ethical issues, which are important for all, including politicians.
All religions are failing in their objectives, but “Blessed are the Peacemakers” does not mean abandoning weaponry unilaterally while trust in fellow man is lacking. David L Davies
