New government is vital in bid for peace

ONE man could end this hellish suffering in Ukraine but that remains a distant probability for as long as Johnson sees his third-rate Churchill act as a means of clinging to his premiership.

Putin is learning the lesson of history that war has its own momentum and is much easier to start than to stop. Rather than risking escalation of this cruel conflict – that could too easily turn nuclear if Putin has nothing to lose – the West needs to offer him a face-saving exit strategy by means of peace talks on the basis of an immediate ceasefire.

This can only happen when Conservative MPs find enough sense of self-preservation to sack their serial offender of a Prime Minister along with his Foreign Secretary, Liz Truss, who seeks to emulate Thatcher by presenting herself as a potential war leader.

Surely we need a government that can unify us and work for peace with the rest of Europe and the wider world. Is this too much to ask? Margaret Phelps Penarth
