Revive the just fear of nuclear weapons

-

THERE is a Welsh proverb: “Segurdod yw clod y cledd, a rhwd yw ei anrhydedd.”

This translates as “Security is the sword’s glory, and rust its honour.”

This does explain the lack of use of nuclear weapons since WW2, with the threat of total apocalypse being well understood.

However, it increasingly appears that we have become immune to their threat and that Putin is attempting to normalise their use. There is another saying, “Beware the feckless children of 70 years of peace.” Without experience of disaster we often think that it can’t possibly happen to us. It can, and just might.

Putin is increasingly a loose cannon. We cannot control him, but it is important to bring back the fear, to all people, of nuclear weapons. To do this, all countries should shout loud and clear and publicise the permanent disaster that nuclear conflagration would bring. Hopefully, this noise will penetrate the Kremlin walls and introduce some hesitancy into Putin’s rhetoric.

Although the proverbial sword is well rusted, I am afraid the degree of corrosion is insufficient to prevent its release from its scabbard.
