Wrexham face off in battle for the crown

- THOMAS LEWIS Football Writer sport@walesonline.co.uk

WREXHAM head into the last game of the season knowing that a win could see them crowned champions of the National League and regain their place in the Football League.

The Dragons face play off chasing Dagenham & Redbridge at Victoria Road whilst title rivals Stockport County host Halifax Town. Both games kick off at 3pm tomorrow afternoon.

Phil Parkinson’s men need to win and hope Halifax beat County at Edgeley Park if the title is to head to North Wales.

If the Hatters do win the league then the Reds will have to negotiate a home play off semi-final tie.

Over 1,500 Wrexham fans will be in attendance in East London.

Those supporters will be hoping that the Dragons can end their 14-year wait for a return to the Football League.

Reds boss Parkinson has been impressed with his players’ attitude and workrate in training in the buildup to the most important match of the season.

He also revealed that there are no fresh injury worries ahead of the pivotal clash.

Parkinson said: “Everyone came through the game okay on Sunday and preparations have gone really well.

“Everyone who was available for selection last week is available again this week.

“The standard of training has been excellent, the lads in the

team have maintained their levels but also the lads out of the team.

“Everyone wants to be a part of these next few weeks.”

Wrexham fell just short in their quest for promotion under previous manager Dean Keates last season, as they could only manage a draw at the same venue on last season’s final day.

The Dragons missed out on the last play off spot as they limped to a 1-1 draw.

Parkinson continued: “The fallback is we’re in second place whatever happens.

“Last year the draw meant that the team missed out on the playoffs, so to secure that second place was important.

“We want that top spot, that’s what we’ve been aiming for, but the way the play-offs work out the second and third place are very important.”

Midfielder Jordan Davies hasn’t given up of taking the title.

“It has been topsy-turvy the whole way but if you’d have said at Christmas that we would be going down to the final game of the season with a chance of winning the title, we’d have snapped your hand off,” said Davies.

“We are looking forward to it and it is a good chance.

“Going into the final game of the season with a chance of winning the title is unbelievable really from where we have come from.

“We are delighted that we have got a chance and hopefully we can take it down at Dagenham.”

The Reds boss said he had a brief chat with Reds co-chairman Rob McElhenney after last Sunday’s win against title rivals Stockport.

He said McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds will be keen spectators from across the pond tomorrow.

Parkinson said: “I spoke to Rob after the game on Sunday.

“They’ve let us get on with the job in hand but we all know they’re right behind us and they’ll be pacing up and down their living rooms watching the live stream, hopefully we can deliver.”
