Influential artist’s sale to celebrate landmark
ARTIST Bryn Richards turns 100 on June 1 and to mark the occasion he’s holding a studio auction of his work to raise money for City Hospice.
The sale takes place next Tuesday at Cornerstone in Cardiff.
Born in Alfred Street, Roath, Cardiff, Richards studied at Cardiff School of Art and served in the navy on HMS Achilles during the Second World War.
He was head of art at Cardiff High School for more than 30 years and wrote for the Anglo Welsh Review and for The Guardian as regional arts correspondent.
As a young painter, Richards was strongly influenced by the Impressionists.
He says: “Late 19th century painting, the Impressionists, Post Impressionists, Cezanne, etc, resonated and reverberated in my consciousness.”
Later, he became filled with admiration for Pre-Raphaelites such as Rossetti and Holman Hunt, although the Post Impressionists retained the most direct influence on his work.
Richards has produced hundreds of paintings during his career and still loves to sketch.
His life as an artist will be celebrated at Cornerstone with champagne and canapes before auction of 41 paintings. The auction will be led by BBC Bargain Hunt auctioneer Ben Rogers Jones of Rogers Jones & Co Auctioneers & Valuers, with all profits going to City Hospice. ■ The auction takes place on May 24 at 7pm at Cornerstone, Charles Street, Cardiff CF10 2SF.
