Worker left vile abuse on colleague’s phone

-

A WORKER left “disgusting and deplorable” messages on a colleague’s phone which included racist abuse and threats to kill him. The victim found the message “grossly offensive” and left him feeling “upset”.

Gerard Clogg, 52, of Cardiff, met his victim Derick Anderson while they were both employed at a recycling centre and they had known each other for around eight years without incident. But in 2020 the defendant was arrested and convicted of raciallyaggravated harassment directed at Mr Anderson and was sentenced to six weeks’ imprisonment.

A sentencing hearing at Cardiff Crown Court heard Mr Anderson had gone to work for another company by the time Clogg was released from prison. But in 2023 he was notified by his employer that the company had employed the defendant. Mr Anderson was told he would not have contact with Clogg and would work separate shift patterns.

The victim came to hear of threats being made by the defendant through colleagues but did not hear from him directly. On March 17 last year, Mr Anderson realised he had received six voice messages from Clogg, which had been sent on March 4 and 5.

The first message said: “Derick, stay away from Karen you stupid black c***”. In the second message Clogg invited the victim to his home and told him he would “need a gun”. He called Mr Anderson a “dirty c***” and said: “I’m going to f ****** hurt you”.

A third message said: “You stupid little f ****** black c***, I am going to kill you”. Clogg accused the victim of having an affair with his wife and called him a “stupid black c***”. In a fourth message the defendant said: “When I see you it’s f ****** going off, you’re dead, you’re having it”. He also called him a “grass” and a “dog”.

In a fifth message Clogg told Mr Anderson he was “happy to go back to jail”. In a final message the defendant said: “I am going to kill you. I ain’t f ****** joking. I am going to jail for you. You won’t be seeing your kids again.”

Clogg, of West Walk, Adamsdown, was arrested and later pleaded guilty to causing racially/ religiously-aggravated fear of violence. The court heard he has 53 previous convictions and has served a 41-week sentence for harassing his former partner in an offence committed after his harassment of Mr Anderson.

Clogg was sentenced to 20 months’ imprisonment, suspended for two years. He was made subject to a 25-day rehabilitation activity requirement, a threemonth curfew, and a restraining order for five years.
