Forecaster Derek holds out hope for some better weather

-

DRIER and warmer weather is on the way for Wales in May and June according to one forecasting model, weatherman Derek Brockway has said.

The BBC Wales forecaster said that April looked set to be a continuation of the above average wet weather that has gripped Wales all winter.

Met Office long range forecasts suggest that there is “little sign of any dramatic change” with “the heaviest and most frequent spells of rain and showers likely to be across southern parts of the UK”.

Derek posted information from the JMA model which suggested that drier and warmer weather would make its way to Wales from May and into June.

He wrote on X, former Twitter: “In Wales, the majority of the last 9 months have been wetter than average. Looks like April will go the same way too with further rain and showers at times.

“But the JMA model suggests drier and warmer weather in May and June! Fingers crossed it’s right.”

The JMA is a global weather forecast model by the Japan Meteorological Agency that predicts long-term, three month weather conditions. If even partially correct it could finally see a dry spell across the country.

The Met Office forecast for April does not bring much hope in the short term.

It states that the first two weeks of April will continue the unsettled spell of weather, ‘with little sign of any dramatic change Initially, the heaviest and most frequent spells of rain and showers are likely to be across southern parts of the UK and often windy, especially in the south and west’.

The second half of April does show at least a glimmer of hope, at the moment at least, with the forecast stating: “Through mid to late April, there is no strong signal for any one particular weather pattern to dominate over another.

“As such, further rain and showers are likely at times, but there is also a reasonable chance of some drier and sunnier spells of weather.

“Temperatures most likely near or a little above normal for the period as a whole.”
