Cameron comeback? ‘It’s up to him’

-

Spending his days enjoying his new £2 million holiday home at Trebetherick on Cornwall’s north coast is clearly not enough for David Cameron – who is seeking a return to front-line politics.

According to a report in The Sun, the former Prime Minister, who quit after the EU referendum, wants to get back into public life, perhaps with a job in the Cabinet he once led as PM.

Downing Street said yesterday a return to frontline politics would be a matter for Mr Cameron. But the idea of a political comeback drew mockery from Labour MPs.

The 52-year-old ex-prime minister has told friends he wanted to return to the front benches two years after leaving Downing Street in the wake of the Brexit vote, according to The Sun.

Mr Cameron would not be against the idea of Cabinet recall in the government of whoever succeeds Theresa May as Prime Minister, the newspaper said.

A spokeswoman for Mrs May said: “Whether he chooses to seek to return to frontline politics or not is entirely a matter for him.”

The spokeswoman added the PM and Mr Cameron “often speak”.

Shadow education minister Angela Rayner labelled the rumoured return of Mr Cameron as “bizarre”. She tweeted: “Just when you thought politics couldn’t get any more bizarre.

“No David please stay in retirement – you caused enough damage last time.”
