Sale is a gas as bidding heats up over Edwardian engine
There were some fantastic results at the recent general sale as Clarks prepare for their traditional big end of year specialist auctions.
A small Edwardian gas engine, used for a short period between steam and the arrival of electricity, made a remarkable £4,050. Of a similar era was an unnamed Edwardian lathe which secured interest at £290, and a pitch pine engineer’s workstation which made £250 at the hammer.
The jewellery on offer was superb and prices reflected this. An 18ct SI diamond ring of approximately 3.25ct made £9,500 at the hammer and a diamond bracelet with 5ct of small diamonds secured £2,800.
An art deco diamond lapel clip made £750 whilst a diamond ring of approximately 1.4ct secured bids of £1,800.
Another 18ct ring set with an unusual shaped triangular SI diamond made £1,200 at the hammer, and a 14ct gold diamond ring set with two bands of diamonds secured bids of £750.
Several of the other more general household entries caused a surprise too. A small box of linen attracted both room and internet support at £200 while a few modern used game bags made £170.
A small collection of play worn Dinky toys had interest also at £170 and two miniature tool chests made £160.
One buyer is clearly planning early for their Christmas roast with a 19th century roasting dish making £120, while a 20th century longcase clock selling for £150.
General tools again did very well throughout the sale with a tired Stanley Bailey No 7 plane making £80 and a similar condition No 55 making £110. Clarks Auction Rooms, Liskeard; tel: 01579 349960 / 07756070198 clarksauctionrooms.com
