Military memorabilia is a salute to our war heroes

-

Armistice Day this year is particularly poignant as it marks 100 years since the cessation of hostilities.

If we delve into our own family trees most will find a relative who fought in that war. To mark tomorrow’s historical landmark, the Centre has compiled a few items.

The framed medals that you see in the picture are the British War medal and the Victory Medal.

The recipient was a soldier of the Welsh Regiment who was one of the fortunate ones to make it home after the war.

It is not known if he went on to fight in the Second World War as many of our veterans did.

The single British War Medal is of particular of interest and remains un-researched. This relates to an Army Captain, but it is not known what his full medal entitlement was or, indeed, if he was a Great War casualty.

Last week the Centre acquired a nice WW1 Officer’s cap which made its way back from France. The leather strap is still intact and it bears a Devonshire Regiment cap badge. It seems appropriate that the cap should make its way back to the Westcountry at this time, and perhaps it will find its way into the hands of a local collector.

As usual the Centre has a large selection of antiques including two fairground items, two motor bikes from a Noahs Ark ride and two metal rifle targets from a Shooting Gallery.
