Ex-servicemen stallholders will help to mark special day
Remembrance Sunday will be commemorated at 11am at the Lostwithiel antique and collectors’ fair tomorrow when everyone will stop and for a minute’s silence.
There are ex-servicemen who are stallholders and play an important part of the event in helping to mark the day.
On The Bookmaid’s stand you will find a book relevant to Remembrance Sunday. Edward Blunden’s experiences in the trenches in World War I prompted him to write a book of war. He wrote more war verse than any other poet involved in the conflict and in 1996 Overtones of War – Poems of the First World War’ was published to commemorate the centenary of his birth. The book is priced at £25.
There will be plenty to choose from ranging from jewellery, ceramics, small furniture and treen to silver, stamps and postcards.
Pat Lee has a fine Majolica gurgle jug on his stand. Dating from the late 19th century, and with nice detail, this jug measures 27x14cm. Priced at £38.
Michael Thomas has an attractive hinged silver-lidded conch shell, with a crest or armorial nicely engraved on the disappointed. Strong items like the saw-handled target pistol by Staples of London (£800-£1,000) or the jade handle pesh kabz (£800-£1,000) should attract keen interest.
Pieces like the WW I two blade laminated mahogany propeller by Hispano Suiza for an SE.5A Wolseley Viper (£800-£1,000) and the WWII German B-Uhr navigator’s watch by Tissot (£1,500-£2,000), are bound to draw strong bidding.
Day two of the auction continues with the textiles section silver lid. Measuring approximately 8x3cm, it dates from 1840-1860. This exquisite item is available for £125.
Sir Amics can always be relied upon for a high-quality stand of ceramics and porcelain.
November sees him bringing an interesting treacle-glazed snuff-taking Toby jug. This item dates from approximately 1900, measures 25x16cm with lid, and costs £55.
