The West remembers

-

The 100th anniversary of Armistice Day will dominate remembrance across the region tomorrow.

Five beaches in Devon and Cornwall are among 32 across the UK that are part of the Pages of the Sea project.

Giant, 20m by 30m portraits of five servicemen will be created in the sand at Porthcurno near Land’s End, Porthmeor in St Ives, Perranporth and East Looe and at Saunton Sands in North Devon from noon.

Members of the public will also be able to take part in producing smaller stencilled portraits, remembering the millions of lives lost or changed forever by the conflict.

All will then be washed away by the incoming tide.

There are additional, different activities at each beach, in the project led by filmmaker Danny Boyle.

Pages of the Sea is co-ordinated locally by the Eden Project, with support from the Lost Gardens of Heligan, at Porthmeor, Perranporth, East Looe and Saunton Sands.

The National Trust is leading the project at Porthcurno.

The Poet Laureate, Carol Ann Duffy, has written a new poem The Wound in Time, which will be read by individuals, families and communities as they gather on the beaches.

People can explore an online gallery of portraits of some of the men and women who served in the First World War, and select someone to thank and say a personal goodbye to either via social media or as they gather in person on beaches – see pagesofthesea.org.uk.

In Truro Cathedral from 10.30am tomorrow there will be a Service of Remembrance. This will include a poppy-drop, where thousands of poppies will gently fall from the central tower.

The Royal British Legion’s Service of Remembrance is in the cathedral from 3.15pm.

In Exeter the “sleeping soldier” image made by artist Leo Jamelli will guard the cathedral, projected on to the North Tower, from dusk tonight until dawn tomorrow.

There is a series of services at the cathedral tomorrow, beginning with a lone bugler at 6am.

The same sound will close the day at the war memorial at 6.55pm.

In Plymouth there will be a Remembrance Day Service on the Hoe, near the city’s main war memorials, at 11am.

At the Minster Church of St Andrew there are services at 9.30am and 11.15am, with an act of remembrance at 11am.
