Raise a glass of Champers to Good Queen Bess
An exciting art section in Tuesday’s auction will include several high quality 19th century paintings. A pair of interior scenes titled ‘Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme’, depicting people in 17th century costume by William Powell Frith RA, has a guide of £3,000-£5,000.
A stunning painting by Fredreich Wilhelm Kuhnert depicting a Cape Buffalo in a marshland scene is £4,000-£6,000, and a pair of 18th/19th century oil on oak panel copies of well-known portraits of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I has an estimate of £1,000-£2,000.
There are some good quality fine wines and spirits in time for Christmas and New Year celebrations. Included is a case of Chateau Durfort Vivens Margaux 2012 (£300-£400), a Mathusalem of Chateau Des Tours Brouilly 1987 (£50-£100), a bottle of 1995 vintage Louis Roederer Cristal Champagne (£140-£160) and a bottle of 1928 Croizet Grande Reserve Cognac in original box at £300. Or you might like six bottles of Fonseca vintage port at an estimate of £250-£350.
A Naval General Service Medal 1793-1840 with two clasps for Trafalgar and St Sebastian was awarded to local man Edward Knapman. As a midshipman, Edward Knapman served on board HMS Spatiate under Sir Francis Laforey at the Battle of Trafalgar when he was wounded in the leg and arm and subsequently received a gratuity from the Patriotic Fund.
Promoted to lieutenant in 1812, he was awarded his second clasp when placed in command of a gunboat during the siege of St Sebastian (£3,000-£5,000).
A section of the sale is dedicated to mid-20th century design and will include a Charles & Ray Eames lounge chair and Ottoman (£1,000-£1,500), a rare and very stylish Telefunken Rondo Stereo 101, complete with two speakers (£300-£500), and a vintage crystal ‘Sputnik’ chandelier by Emil Stejnar for Rupert Nikoll, 70cm high, 40cm diameter, (£200-£300).
An unusually large Whitefriars ‘Drunken Bricklayer’ vase by Geoffrey Baxter is in the kingfisher blue ‘colourway’, standing 33.5cm high (£200-£300).
