‘Gayday’ vase is vibrant example of Clarice Cliff
Several pieces that are instantly recognisable to many, as well as more unusual pieces, will catch bidders’ attention at Tuesday’s sale. The bright vibrant colours of a Clarice Cliff ‘Gayday’ vase are what has made Clarice Cliff so instantly recognisable over the years. Even though this example is perhaps a more common design, a pre-sale estimate of £60-£80 should attract a lot of interest.
Rory Dobner may not be a name that is quite so recognisable, but that’s what make auctions so interesting. This small handmade sculpture of ‘Oswald’ is an early piece by a contemporary artist who has had commissions by Christian Dior, Fortnum & Mason as well as Nike.
His designs are currently being sold by Liberty’s in London so this could be a chance to acquire an early piece that potentially could be a great investment.
As the auction market has moved to more modern designers and vintage or retro pieces to fit with 21st century interior design, there is a fantastic opportunity to obtain some more traditional pieces at a reasonable price.
For instance, the Worcester porcelain jardinière in the form of an elephant after Hadley, is certainly very ‘traditional’ in terms of antiques and, with an estimate of £40-£60, should be sought after. Likewise a small bronze cherub is a wonderful piece of sculpture that would make a statement piece as an accessory to dress any modern home (£60-£80).
