June 1 way too early for schools to return

-

AS the grandparent of one child in Year 1 and another in nursery school returning to school on the suggested date of June 1, of course I am naturally anxious and think that the proposed date given by the Government is far to soon.

How are the teachers going to explain to a six-year-old that they must not go near their playmates who they haven’t seen for several weeks? They will find a way.

We are told that young children rarely contract Covid-19, and if they do they only suffer mild symptoms. However, they are capable of passing the virus to teachers and parents at home. Who will look after the children then when grandparents are told to stay away?

This Government made huge mistakes in the management of care homes; what’s to say they haven’t made another mistake with our children. What difference would another few weeks make, which would give teachers more time to organise hand washing facilities and classrooms?

Pity the poor teachers who will be spending more time observing than teaching. Or is this more about getting the economy of this country moving – and hang the consequences? Would a simple solution be to bring forward the August break sending pupils back earlier than September?
