Online auction has high hopes

MICHAEL Bowman’s 2pm Online Auction today includes a modern limited edition print in superb condition by Patrick Caulfield RA (1936-2005). The brightly coloured screen print, measuring 21-inches square, is entitled ‘Still Life With Ingredient­s’ and is signed by the artist. Its Newton Abbot vendor acquired it in the late 1980s from Waltham Forest Arts Council. Small prints cost £50 and larger ones like this were priced at £100. Caulfield’s screen prints are highly regarded today and this example is expected to realise between £1,000 and £1,500.

With similar hopes, but from a much earlier time, is the small 17th century Welsh silk embroidery depicting the Judgement of Solomon. This intricate work was fashioned by Bridget Pryce of Montgomery­shire. Padded stumpwork details feature, as well as gold and silver thread and numerous sequins. Solomon is probably depicted as Charles II, sitting in wise judgement over the disputed ownership of the infant child, in an outdoor setting beneath the rays of a shining sun.

Two early gold coins are also on offer. A 15th century hammered gold angel from the reign of Henry VII should make at least £300-400, whilst the slightly earlier noble of Edward III has a conservati­ve £400-600 estimate.
