‘Country house’ feel online

-

THE Charterhouse two-day online auction in Sherborne very much has the look and feel of a classic country house auction. “There is a fascinating selection of lots from a 7th century BC Cypriot earthenware jug to Regency furniture, Victorian portrait pictures and modern 20th century furnishings with Lalique glass and a Mies van der Rohe Barcelona table,” comments Richard Bromell. “And if none of these take your fancy, then a Cartier 18ct white gold and diamond bangle, or a John Deere ride-on lawn mower might just!”

The auction, being held on Thursday 4th and Friday 5th June, will be online only with live internet, telephone and absentee bidding.

Highlights in the auction include a collection of David Hockney related items, coming directly from the estates of the late Ann and David Graves. Ann was David Hockney’s muse for many years and David Graves his studio assistant.

From an old Somerset rectory there are a large amount of furnishings. Here, there is period 18th and 19th century furniture through to a pair of 18th century style lead dogs which stood guard in the hallway, and a late 20th century L S Lowry print of a beach scene.

However, it is not just old houses which hide antiques away. Also in the auction is the contents from a recently built town house in Taunton, which Charterhouse were instructed to clear.

Lots removed from this property include a collection of 17th century and later maps, a fine George III satinwood Pembroke table and a pair of late Regency hall chairs, the likes of which would usually have graced the interior of an old country house rather than a nearly new property.

Viewing for this large two-day auction is by appointment only, to enable the auctioneers to manage safe working practice including social distancing, thereby keeping staff and clients safe. All lots are available to view on www.charterhouse-auction.com where live internet bidding is also accessible.
