End of lockdown gives golf a boost
THE nineteenth hole may have only just reopened, but that hasn’t stopped golfers returning to the fairways in their droves.
Lanhydrock Hotel & Golf Club in Bodmin has enjoyed a fruitful couple of months despite the coronavirus crisis, announcing its highest yet number of new golf memberships.
Since Lanhydrock’s golf course reopened on May 14, owners Clare and Graham Bond have seen a reassuring surge in interest.
“Having had a very challenging few months of closure due to Covid19, it was fantastic to see familiar faces returning to enjoy the course again, as well as lots of new faces from across the county” Clare Bond said.
“Not only is golf proven to be a very healthy hobby, it can be played whilst socially distancing.
“There’s no denying that during tough times people need an outlet to release stress, and golf is perfect for that; it allows you to have fun exercising out in the fresh air and amongst stunning surroundings. It’s so good for the soul.”
Golf, angling and tennis were the first sports to be allowed to recommence following weeks of lockdown.
Mrs Bond said: “Since reopening, we have had an influx of new members joining, which is wonderful, especially for our team of greenkeepers who worked tirelessly throughout the lockdown to keep our greens pristine.
“Our new rules for playing safely are being strictly observed, with all our members being so considerate and understanding of our new normal.”
Throughout the period of forced closure, the club experienced an abundance of both rain and sunshine, which, coupled with no golfers playing, has brought the best out of the natural condition of the course. Combined with the hard work and effort of its greenkeeping team, Lanhydrock Golf Course is in its best-ever condition.
The couple moved into the hotel at the start of lockdown with their dogs Bruce and Basil and documented their daily antics on the hotel’s Facebook page, attracting nationwide attention.
“It has been a rollercoaster year, but we feel optimistic about being fully reopen again and having seen such interest in our golf offering,” Mrs Bond said.
“Despite this period of uncertainty, there is a real buzz around the whole club as members enjoy each other’s company again after months at home, the banter in the car park has resumed and even Bruce and Basil join in.”
