Dame Georgiana was a leading light

-

conservatives among my generation is much less international than younger generations. They were never happy with the idea that our bold, independent and adventurous nation had become part of a union of European countries, which is why they made up such a significant proportion of those who voted for Brexit.

And I suspect that in the back of their minds – and maybe not so far back – there lurks the thought that other nationalities and ethnicities really are inferior to us Brits.

In their youth they were probably fans of Maggie Thatcher, who was largely silent for a long time about the apartheid regime in South Africa, where her husband was making a fortune from diamond mines worked by exploited black labourers.

And how many before that supported Enoch Powell and were convinced by his 1968 assertion that “In this country in 15 or 20 years time the black man will have the whip over the white man”. Some “whip hand” they have gained over the last 52 years!

And those who like to believe that Greta Thunberg and other young climate protesters are naive puppets of Marxist conspirators should listen to her spoken essay on BBC Radio 4’s programme Summer with Greta, available at: https://www.bbc.co.uk/ programmes/p08kbsm0.

Her intelligent, knowledgeable and articulate account of the issues surrounding the climate crisis can’t help but impress the most sceptical listener – its maturity and intellectual content certainly put most WMN letters to shame, including mine.
