Lots that will lift your spirits
ELDREDS first specialist sale of the autumn includes a broad range of wines, Port and spirits from private cellars throughout Devon and Cornwall, perfectly timed for the Christmas table.
Red wines from recognised French Chateaux, some of which are full cases in their original wooden crates, include six magnums of Chateau Beychevelle 1998, (£300-500), full cases of Chateau Gloria 2003 St Julian, at £250-350, Chateau Talbot 1996, in its original case, estimated at £300-500 and chateaux D’Arsac 2009 (Margaux) which expects £250-350.
An interesting collection of over 140 bottles of vintage Port includes four bottles of Warres 1985 at £100-150, twelve bottles of Quinta do Noval from the same year at £350-450 and an original wooden case containing six bottles of Graham’s 1980 at £180-220.
Aged whisky catalogued for sale includes a bottle of Glendronach 18yr old single malt, in box, £400-600, a 70cl bottle of Knockando 1978, £60-80, Balvenie and many more.
A special commemorative bottle of Laphroaig whisky is included in the sale; 15-years aged and bottled from a cask signed by HRH The Prince of Wales during his visit to the distillery on Islay in June 1994, the proceeds of sale from the 290 bottles were donated to The Cancer Relief Macmillan Fund. The bottle is numbered ‘242’ and asks £200-300 at the sale.
Also included in the auction is a collection of vintage tools, including numerous 19th century and later chisels and planes by Marple’s, Stormont, Herring, Addis and others.
Two heavy brass mitre planes with dovetailed brass soles expect £200-300, each with rosewood infill and wedge, they evoke the craftsmanship of a bygone age.
A collection of Mayflower memorabilia is offered for sale, including limited-edition ceramics depicting aspects of the history of the Mayflower sailing by Royal Doulton, Royal Worcester and Spode and a limited-edition silver cream jug, with inscription commemorating the 350th anniversary of the sailing of the ship, the signing of the Compact and the founding of the Plymouth colony, with estimate £80-120. A modern silver Port label with cast decoration of the Mayflower will be a stylish addition and conversation starter at £20-30.
Sections of furniture, clocks and pictures, ceramics, metalware and glass, small silver, coins, jewellery & watches complete the sale.
