Change of name for Devon’s Rose West

-

DEVON-BORN serial killer Rose West is believed to have changed her infamous name by deed poll to Jennifer Jones in a bid to move on from her evil past.

The 67-year-old, who is locked up for life for the murders of 10 women, including her own daughter Heather, 16, and stepdaughter Charmaine, eight, is thought to have paid £36 to change her name earlier this month, according to The Sun.

Rose West, who was born and grew up in Bideford, North Devon, in 1953 and was the fifth of seven children, is said to have asked prisons officers and inmates to call her by her new name.

But the order has sparked anger among many at New Hall women’s jail, near Wakefield, West Yorks.

A source told The Sun: “Rose thinks the name will give her some anonymity but there’s a lot of anger about it.

“She’s chosen the new surname because it’s so common and the Christian name just because she’s always liked it.

“For her, it’s more about getting rid of any association to Fred for good.”

Rose helped her husband torture and murder at least nine girls and women in the 1970s and 1980s at their home in Gloucester.

Her husband Fred killed himself in jail while awaiting trial in 1995.

Rose had been loyal to Fred for decades, but after she was convicted of 10 murders in November that year she claimed he had acted alone.

A string of appeals failed. Last year, Rose was moved to New Hall where she spends much of her time alone.

Rose was born in Northam, North Devon, in November 1953.

After a troubled childhood a 16 year old Rose fell in love with 28 year old Fred West.

The couple moved together to Gloucester at the beginning of the 1970s and so began more than a decade of sexual abuse and murder.

From 1967 to 1987, nine victims were buried at the House of Horrors on Cromwell Street, Gloucester. To this day, Rose still denies her role in the murders.
