Smart motorways can be alarming

-

A WHILE ago allegations were made that smart motorways were more dangerous than standard motorways. Examination of statistics shows that per mile there is little difference.

The system relies on the control centre being notified by cameras of any stationary vehicle, the lane then being closed and help sent. This can take 30 minutes, giving a terrifying experience to persons in the trapped vehicle.

On a standard motorway there are telephone kiosks periodically which connect directly to police who will send help. In these days of almost universal mobile phone ownership, could there not be a number publicised which could call for help on a smart motorway?

I am not fully familiar with procedure but found myself about to use a closed lane. There followed a difficult time as traffic in lanes to either side was now heavily congested and drivers reluctant to allow me to change lanes. A low speed limit and chevrons on the road surface indicating a safe distance between vehicles would have helped.
