New Year fire hits Cornwall takeaway

-

FIREFIGHTERS worked into the early hours of New Year’s Day to tackle a blaze at a takeaway in Cornwall.

Emergency services received calls about the fire at around 10pm on December 31 at the takeaway in Fore Street, Pool, near Redruth. The blaze started on the ground floor of the premises before spreading to the first floor.

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service (CFRS) said the first crew was at the scene within four minutes and after arriving they requested assistance.

Eight crews – two from Tolvaddon and one each from Hayle, Perranporth, Truro, St Ives and St Dennis – attended the scene along with an Aerial Ladder Platform from Newquay, a Command Unit from St Just and a Breathing Apparatus Support Unit from Falmouth.

Officers from Devon and Cornwall Police closed off the road while firefighters brought the ground floor fire under control.

CFRS gave several updates during the night, saying crews were able to make “good progress” to get the blaze under control, with police using a drone to help firefighters get an aerial survey of the incident.

The road was reopened at around 1.50am by which time all hotspots had been extinguished.
