Cornwall: Be careful what you wish for...

-

A SERIES of recent letters from Tommy Bray conveys the distinct impression that people who were not born in Cornwall are not welcome there, whether as tourists, second home owners or even permanent residents – including those who have been elected to serve on Cornwall Council and are trying to make a contribution to their local communities!

I take the point about people buying up smaller properties as second homes, thereby depleting the stock of affordable housing for local young people and rendering some villages near-deserted off season (not a problem unique to Cornwall).

That said, Mr Bray would do well to consider where the Cornish economy would be were it not for its tourist industry.

Beautiful as Cornwall is, there are other delightful parts of the Westcountry – indeed the whole UK – to visit. Few people want to go where they are not welcome, let alone spend their money there.
