Ring has an intriguing history

ABEAUTIFUL ring purchased in Plymouth in the 1950s could well be that made by the luxury French jeweller Cartier.

The owners father purchased it from jewellery firm Manchester House situated at that time in Cornwall Street, Plymouth. He said: “The ring was purchased by my father circa 1950 for his wife as a special thank you for her help in his setting up a small business after WWII.

“The manager at the time was a Mr Robins. We were always led to believe that the design was typical of ‘Cartier‘ but if not from their workshops probably made by one of his designers or outworks.”

The stunning sapphire and diamond ring has a strong sculptural asymmetric Art Deco design and bears a close resemblance to rings produced by Cartier in the 1930s.

Valuer Paul Keen said: “Although there are no markings on the ring to allow us to offer a firm attribution, it is certainly of the quality and style of Cartier.”

The stylish ring is set with approximately one carat of diamonds and baguette cut sapphires in a weighty mount.

It is expected to sell for over £1,000 when it comes up for auction at Plymouth Auction Rooms online sale on March 17.
