Stand by for a chilly March – with the chance of some snow

-

THE Met Office has revealed that the South West could see another cold snap – potentially bringing more snow.

As parts of south and central Devon and the east of Cornwall face a yellow weather warning for heavy rain until 8pm today the long range forecast suggests another period of colder weather.

Temperatures are set to plummet in March, forecasters say, although it isn’t likely to be as cold as in recent weeks.

The Met Office says that while it is too early to accurately predict where snow might fall so far in advance, weather patterns in recent years mean it’s more likely we’ll “get a white Easter than a white Christmas”.

A Met Office spokesperson said: “In a long-range weather forecast there are lots of ifs and buts with any weather forecast beyond seven days, so it’s quite challenging to get a reasonably accurate forecast.

“Longer-term forecasts often focus on climate drivers and what generally will happen in that period. It means it’s something we aren’t going to rule out meteorologically, as we’re more likely to get snow at Easter than Christmas, and March generally has more days of snow than November.

“The South West is more likely to get snow when the cold pool of air across the UK meets warm air with more moisture making an incursion via the South West.”
