Jewellery and trophies attract plenty of interest

-

THE Antique Sale at the Auction Rooms Lostwithiel was a great success for the online-only auction, on Wednesday 17th February, with most lots sold passing their sale guide prices and over 90% of lots sold.

A collection of silver aviation trophies flew past their guide prices – the most impressive being a 15.5” triangular form winged trophy with a globe of the world as a finial, the ‘Ted Jones Trophy’ awarded to the most ‘Meritorious Navigational Performance of the Year’ at the Brooklands School of Flying and Northamptonshire Aero club. The bidding soared past the £1,000-£1,500 guide, selling for £4,000. The buyer won the trophy back in the 1970s. Another trophy from the same stable went to a Northamptonshire buyer, the ‘Brooklands Trophy-landing competition’. The 15” high silver lidded trophy cup went five times past the expectations at £3,200.

A collection of Georgian and Victorian Irish cutlery did well at £1,250, whilst a set of Kings pattern cutlery made £1,050. With earlier sales postponed

a backlog of some 300 lots of jewellery went under the hammer, an impressive 18ct white gold diamond line bracelet, set with 44 brilliant cut diamonds totalling some 9.3cts, attracted a £4,700 bid; a heavy platinum three-stone diamond ring, the three old cut diamonds totalling 2cts, made £3,600; a heavy 18ct gold Albert chain weighing 69 grams attracted a £2,100 bid; while a gents Rolex Oyster wristwatch with diamond set sunburst dial went to a new home at £3,150.

Michael Cardew was a local wellknown potter and an early piece from the Winchcombe Pottery was offered, the large 14.5” vase with four lug handles and stylised decoration sold at £860, and a Chinese porcelain famille verte decorated vase attracted a £740 bid.

It was pleasing to see the furniture sell so well, a Victorian 11’ mahogany extending dining table with three extra leaves, which a couple of years ago would have struggled to make £500, sold to a Midlands buyer at £1,250, and a 19th Century mahogany campaign chest went for £840.

Jefferys Auctions are now taking further items for forthcoming sales by appointment. A special sale of jewellery is scheduled for Wednesday 3rd March, an Antique and General sale will be held the 10th March. Contact enquiries@jefferysauctions. co.uk or telephone 01208 87194.
