Help is at hand for those with cancer

MANY local families are struggling with the financial impact of the pandemic but what about those facing a cancer diagnosis at the same time? I am writing to let your readers know help is available from Macmillan Cancer Support if they are finding it hard to make ends meet.

Macmillan hardship grants are one-off, means tested payments for people living with cancer in the Westcountry facing financial difficulties. The grants are designed to help if you are on a low income and struggling to pay everyday basics, such as your heating bill, travel to hospital for treatment, clothing and bedding. Macmillan gave over £583,100 in grants across the South West so that 1,900 people were able to pay for home comforts such as heating their homes whilst shielding during the pandemic last year. All thanks to public donations.

As a Macmillan Benefits Adviser I talk to people every day with money worries because they cannot work due to their cancer treatment.

I’d urge anyone reading who is living with cancer and struggling financially to call Macmillan on 0808 808 00 00, seven days a week and talk to the Macmillan Welfare Rights team (or visit macmillan.org. uk/grants). They will be able to tell you if you are eligible for a grant and about the rest of the support on offer. Macmillan are only a phone call away and are waiting to help you, whatever it takes.
