Picture and decorative art sale was a huge success

-

THE Truro Auction Centre held its specialised auction on Friday, April 23, a one-off Picture and Decorative Art Sale with about 250 lots received from one local estate.

This small auction was greatly received by collectors and enthusiasts and hundreds of potential bidders registered to bid online in such a different type of sale which certainly produced great results.

The highlight of the day was the small yellow glazed china bowl by prolific potter Lucie Rie. This pedestal bowl initially came into the saleroom with the remains of a dead plant inside and once cleaned looked stunning and had the original receipt when it was purchased in 1983 for £575. Fierce internet bidding soon sped past the estimate of £10001500 to eventually sell to a telephone bidder at £12,000.

Two gouaches by St Ives artist Roger Hilton were highly contested – lot 1 being a small abstract study dated 1974 which sold at £3000 and a larger abstract example later in the sale dated 1973 sold online at £3400. The limited edition set of six bronze Cornish seeds by Kurt Jackson which included Restormal beech, Truro conker, Boscastle alder, St Just hazel, Helford oak and Cremyll chestnut, all contained in a sycamore box signed by Kurt Jackson and limited to No. 3/3 with original receipt dated 2011 sold locally at £700.00.

The next specialised auction at the Truro Auction Centre is a two-day Collector’s Sale on May 28, entries close May 7. For more information visit www.cornwallauction.co.uk or call on 01209 822266.
