ATWO-DAY auction of antiques and selected items, including furniture, jewellery, silver and plate, clocks, china and glassware, collectabl­es, metalware, pictures and paintings, is to be held on Thursday 29th and Friday 30th July at Rendells, Ashburton, from 10am daily.

Rendells’ July sale has a wide and varied selection of antiques and collectabl­es on offer, with a large furniture section, including numerous Chinoiseri­e (decorated in the Chinese style) items (eg below), plus antique and retro English and Continenta­l pieces.

This sale features a full selection of silver and jewellery on the Friday afternoon, with jewellery prices ranging from £10 for mixed costume jewellery, to £1,800 for a platinum Art Deco style curved panel ring, set with various cut emeralds and diamonds (see photo, above right). Ceramics, collectabl­es and pictures are also well represente­d. There are also sections of outside effects, rugs and metalware.

Among the furniture items, there is a good selection of antique, retro and later furniture, including chests of drawers, dressers, cabinets, bookcases, desks, tables and chairs, wardrobes and mirrors, etc. For example, there is a 19th century ebonised and parcel gilt framed wall mirror with decorative pediment and applied mouldingwh­ich asks £500-£600. And a late 18th century pine cricket table, set on moulded legs with triangular undertier asks £150-£200.

The clocks and barometers section includes various carriage clocks and timepieces. An early 19th century Austrian ornate salon mantle clock, with applied brass detail and flanking giltwood dragons has an estimate of £700-£750.

Among the collectabl­es, there is a wide and varied mélange of the weird and wacky, featuring everything from lighting to toys via textiles, militaria, cameras, coins, signs, tools, vintage HiFi and bijouterie, etc.

In ceramics, we have good quality glassware, English, Continenta­l and Oriental ceramics including figures, vases, plates, sets and part sets of dinner and teaware. For example, four Royal Doulton bone china Collie dog figurines in various sizes expects £200-£250, and a pair of antique Berlin porcelain table salts of shell form with grotesque fish stem, hand painted with birds, foliage and insects expects £120-£150.

In metalwork, we have a selection of fine furniture, figures and collectabl­e copper and brassware. For example, a pair of modern cast bronze figurines of boxing hares on polished marble plinths expects £100-£120.

In silver plate, there is a large selection of mixed lots of silver plated items, tea and coffee sets, dinner ware, candlestic­ks and cutlery, etc. For example, a 40cm high ornate silver plated table centrepiec­e in the form of a tree with applied dog at its base, set on a rock effect base, expects £80-£120.

In silver, we have a full section of antique, later and collectabl­e silver items, featuring candlestic­ks, tea sets, cutlery, photograph and other frames, condiments and small items, etc. For example, a pair of silver candlestic­ks with detachable nozzles and loaded octagonal bases by William Hutton & Sons – Sheffield 1912 expects £100-£150.

In jewellery, there are also various wrist and pocket watches, and a marked 18k fancy-link bracelet, set with differing coloured sapphires which expects £700-£800, and a pair of marked 18k Art Deco style diamond encrusted multi-drop earrings, set with baguette and round brilliant cut stones, boxed, expects £1,100-£1,400.

In pictures and paintings, we have various works by local artists, including named views and scenes, portraitur­e, antique and modern paintings, good quality prints and maps, etc. For example, a gilt framed oil on canvas, depicting a fishing vessel in a harbour – signed with monogram, possibly J.S. Keats – expects £70-£100. Also a gilt framed William Kips map of Devon, 2nd edition of 1610, based on C Saxton’s 1574 Survey of England, expects £80-£120.
