I can never see Prince Harry voluntarily renouncing his titles
WITH reference to the letter from Henry Lawson (WMN, July 29) in which he criticises my own letter regarding Prince Harry, he is correct in saying that Harry did not chose to be a Royal, but having been born and brought up as such he has enjoyed all the wealth and privileges of that position for a number of years and has now decided to turn his back on his country, his family and all that he knew.
That of course is his and/or his wife’s decision and they will have to live with it, but having done so, to give TV interviews and write books complaining about what a hard life he has led and to openly criticize his family and bring hurt to his grandmother, his father and his brother is unforgivable.
Even so, for all his faults I can never see Harry voluntarily renouncing his titles, let alone embracing republicanism. However, I suspect that Mr Lawson’s defence of Prince Harry has more to do with the republican views which he appears to hold, together with what seems to be antipathy towards the monarchy and his apparent approval of the French Republic.
It would appear that Mr Lawson is quite happy to describe himself as ‘upper middle class’, which seems to be at odds with his political stance where talk of ‘class’ is usually associated with the views of the left, no doubt that description of his status would not have gone down too well during the French Revolution!
Finally, Mr Lawson speaks of the ‘English prejudices of the French’... it works both ways Mr Lawson, our support for France during two World Wars cannot undo the hundreds of years of friction between the two countries; remember it was De Gaulle who refused to let us join the EEC after the war, and even today President Macron is still doing his best to make things difficult for the UK now we have left the EU.
I have an idea... as you seem to have a particular affinity towards France and you say that any French citizen can become President, why not take on French nationality and give it a go?
