Government has no strategy, no goals

-

I DO not understand why Mr David Lucas is still complaining about winning the EU referendum. He lays the blame for the current problematic relationship mostly at the feet of the EU. Yet, the UK decided to have a referendum, so flawed and badly written that five years on we are still tussling over the negotiations.

The bottom line is that the Leave group lied about the magnificent benefits of Brexit.

Liam Fox told us: “The free trade agreement that we will have to do with the European Union should be one of the easiest in human history.”

David Davis assured us that “Within minutes of a vote for Brexit the CEO’s of Mercedes, BMW, VW and Audi will be knocking down Chancellor Merkel’s door demanding that there be no barriers to German access to the British market.”

Johnson lied about his ‘ovenready’ deal and the vast monetary benefits to the UK.

Sajid Javid said: “I think most of the work has already been done. We already start from a position where the EU and the UK are aligned; we’re agreed on all the key principles.”

David Frost, chief negotiator, now has no faith in his own negotiated Brexit agreement which means a border in the Irish Sea. In fact he admitted he had not fully foreseen the “chilling effect” of the new red tape, which has left smaller businesses facing higher costs.

The analogy that springs to my mind is that after a particularly acrimonious divorce, the defendant is expected to ignore recent history.

“Take a key to the house we once shared, use it as your own, here is my pin number – help yourself to my bank account, our relationship will not have to change at all although it was you who wanted the divorce. I am so very happy to subjugate my needs to ensure your wellbeing”.

Even the awful Dominic Cummings, mastermind of the Vote Leave group, has admitted leaving the EU could have been “a mistake”. When asked if he was sure EU withdrawal was the right thing for Britain, Mr Cummings replied: “I think anyone who says they’re sure about questions like that has got a screw loose, whether you’re on the Remain side or our side.”

How can it be the EU’s fault that the UK cannot negotiate an advantageous deal?

To succeed you must have a strategy and clear goals. As with everything else, this chaotic government has proved they have neither.
