Quality items at two-day sale

-

LODGE and Thomas, The Truro Sale Room, has begun its 130th anniversary year with an extraordinary Antique Sale in February that demonstrated the quality at the core of its longevity.

Day one showcased the metals and miscellaneous section with most lots exceeding expectations, the highlight being a fine early 19th century sampler by Elizabeth Muir dated 1812 which completely eclipsed its estimate to achieve a brilliant price of £2,800.

An early 20th century ventriloquist’s dummy attracted attention from specialist collectors to achieve an outstanding £1,900, and a Wedgwood ‘Florentine’ pattern part dinner service saw interest from both internet and phone bidders before finally selling for £750.

The eagerly anticipated Oriental section saw local and global buyers in fierce competition. The spotlight fell on a beautiful late Qing dynasty Chinese porcelain Qianlong marked famille rose three part vase that achieved a hammer price of £3,100.

A real surprise was the Chinese porcelain Kangxi mark saucer dish decorated with bats in iron red, this soared well over the estimate to sell for £980 to a buyer in Hong Kong.

Day two saw the continuation of turbulent in-room bidding, with the vintage wristwatches section once again performing very well in tandem with the current market. The avidly awaited Rolex Tudor Oysterdate Monte Carlo Chronograph gentleman’s wristwatch achieved a strong £8,800, coupled with a Cartier gentleman’s 18ct gold cased wristwatch hitting its top estimate at £3,000.

The jewellery section also saw lots achieving well over their estimate. A high purity gold rock quartz pentagonal pendant, set with twenty-eight diamonds, went for £1,700 to a local bidder.

Furniture sold remarkably well. A stunning Chinoiserie decorated lacquered kneehole desk in early 18th century style stole the show, selling for an impressive £7,200. The early 19th century celestial 12-inch table top globe by Dr Nevil Maskelyne sold for £2,750. At £1,150 was the George III style oak pot board dresser base, with a matched pair of Regency style mahogany window seats going for £880 to a buyer in London.

The next Fine Art Sale will be held on Friday, April 1.
