First sale of spring has some surprises

-

CLARKS’ first sale of spring on March 10th sees a few handsome jewellery entries. A ladies 14ct white gold bangle with 7.65ct of blue and white diamonds asks £2,500-£3,000, while £1,000£2,000 is expected for a substantial 18ct gold Appleton, Tracy & Co. gent’s full hunter pocket watch.

There is currently a rise in interest for pocket watches and naturally Albert chains too. An equally impressive 19thC. American 14ct gold Albert with a pill box fob, inlaid with carnelian and onyx, has a guide of £1,800-£2,200. Bullion remains a popular form of collecting and investment. A Victorian 22ct gold proof £5 sovereign should make £1,000 £2,000, while £200-£300 is asked of each for two gold sovereigns. Silver prices remain buoyant and £1,000-£1,500 is hoped for a 1942 12-setting canteen by William Hutton & Sons of Sheffield. From the same property, an art deco, 1940 Sheffield silver four-piece silver tea

set by Frank Cobb & Co Ltd, comprising teapot, coffee pot, creamer and sugar bowl, should achieve its guide of £400-£600. A heavy gauge, handsome 1936 Asprey of London silver George VI & Elizabeth Coronation Cup (£100-£150) and a Briggs of London silver parasol handle (£100150) also catch the eye.

The right type of furniture remains of strong interest to bidders and a Georgian chest on chest, of compact proportions, should easily achieve its guide of £200-£300. A large extending Victorian mahogany dining table with impressive ball and claw feet hopes for £300-£500, and from the same home is an inlaid rosewood display dresser at £200£300. Other household furnishings include a framed original Robert Lenkiewicz pencil sketch (£60-£80) and a 1936 Steinway piano (£6,000£8,000). Whilst on musical instruments, an early 20thC. Edward Withers violin with original case (£300-£500) and a cased brass Paxman Studenti model French horn (£100-£150), should find new homes.

On the back of Clarks’ recent success of selling plain bronze censer for £38,000, sees the arrival of a late 18th/early19thC. Chinese eight symbol dragon robe. With a further eleven smaller, decorative dragons within the design, the robe guide is set at £3,000-£5,000. A large 19thC. Chinese gilded vase on blue ground with stand with lotus flowers and bat decor, despite repair to lid, has a guide of £300-500.
