Specialist silver sale offers rare collectors’ items

WHITTONS of Honiton’s next auction is a Silver Sale on Wednesday, March 23 commencing at 10.30am.

Among the items on offer is a large fine and rare George II silver gilt trophy cup and cover with two scroll handles, heavily decorated with flowers and leaves. Made in London in 1738, it has a pre-sale estimate of £3000 - £4000.

There is also a large, heavy silver coffee pot of tapering form with crested side, made in London in 1729 by John Eckford, estimate £3,000 - £4,000.

This auction is a collectors’ dream with a vast array of novelty items such as vinaigrett­es, snuff boxes, wine labels and early spoons, all sourced locally and privately.

In particular, there is a fine collection of more than 30 Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian silver caddy spoons of varying designs and makers, and to whet the appetite of the collectors of later designer silver there is a rare pair of Stuart Devlin goblets of typical textured silver gilt design with a pre-sale estimate of only £600 - £800.

There is also a rare and exquisite silver mounted Georgian Warwick cruet all with matching hallmarks throughout, estimated at £1200 £1500.

Viewing for this auction will be by appointmen­t on Monday 21st and Tuesday, March 22 from 9.30am – 4pm.

Whittons is currently consigning for a two-day Charity Auction to raise essential funds for Ukraine. All usual commission­s and buyers’ premiums will be donated to this cause, and The Saleroom.com and Easy Live Auctions have agreed to also donate all online registrati­on and internet fees for this auction.

Over 1000 lots of fine silver, jewellery, collectabl­es, furniture and Militaria have already been consigned, with further consignmen­ts being invited. More details to follow.
