Record-breaking two-day auction
ELDREDS auctioneers and valuers held a record-breaking two-day auction of collectors’ items, coins, stamps, medals and toys in early March.
Among the medals section of the sale was spotted a Mexico, Imperial Order of Guadeloupe medal, with silver, gold and enamel cross, which eclipsed its pre-sale estimate, selling to a Ukrainian buyer for £4,000, and a Queen’s South Africa medal pair sold to a specialist medal collector for £1,200.
A very large one-owner collection of mainly OO gauge model railway engines, rolling stock and accessories sold to excited buyers for £14,500 and two oneowner collections of coins, including gold sovereigns, antique silver coins, modern silver collectable commemorative coins and a rare Queen Victoria 1847 Gothic crown in excellent condition realised £30,000 under the hammer.
Bidding on an unusual 19th century French fashion doll, with bisque head and lower arms, stuffed leather body and pierced ears demonstrated the special nature of this little doll which sold for £620 and an interesting collection of vintage badges, including military examples and fourteen 1930’s song sheet promotional enamel pin badges by Miller, Birmingham sold for £3,500.
A collection of exotic seashells and oceanic tribal adornments with provenance > connected to the Horniman Museum in London sold for £9,000 to telephone and internet bids in the USA and Belgium and a large fascinating and fun collection of Victorian Valentines and other greetings cards flew to bidders around the globe for £3,000.
Postcards also generated interest and a large collection including examples by A R Quinton, humorous and glamour themes and a small number of rare scenes of Hartlepool spotted by a longtime collector sold for £7,500.
