Plan for new waste recycling centre

-

PLANS for a new, state-of-the-art Household Waste Recycling Centre to serve residents in Tavistock and the surrounding areas have been submitted.

The existing Household Waste Recycling Centre on Crowndale Road, Tavistock, is reportedly no longer fit for purpose, gets congested and is inadequate for modern demands.

This leads to frequent queuing of traffic along Crowndale Road, which can be significant at times.

The new, larger, purpose designed facility will give local residents “a superior service, with minimal queuing/congestion and make it far easier and more convenient to recycle”.

A statement with the planning application says: “The current site is inadequate for modern demands and suffers a number of health and safety issues. The site must be temporarily closed to the public when waste compaction takes place or when full skips/containers need to be exchanged for empty ones. Given the fact that the site is no longer fit for purpose, leads to extensive queuing problems on the public highway, and cannot be reconfigured/re-engineered to meet modern demands, there is a clear need for a replacement. A new, purpose-built facility would allow local residents to experience a far superior service with minimal queuing/congestion and make it easier to recycle.”

The proposed location for the new recycling centre is on brownfield land adjacent to the existing facility. The new design allows for waste containers to be changed over without the need to close the site. Subject to planning permission being granted, work would begin in 2024 and then open to the public in 2024 or 2025.
