Treasure trove of lots coming to auction

THE upcoming 20th Century & Contemporary auction by Bearnes Hampton & Littlewood on Tuesday, September 13 has over 400 lots that range from jewellery to pictures to studio pottery, design and furniture.

Lot 104, the 1960s gold, ruby and diamond brooch is estimated at £300-500* and takes pride of place on the catalogue cover. One of the leading pictures is a 1980s watercolour, pen and ink drawing by Jean Jaques Sempe titled Le Mousquetaire which is estimate at £4000-6000* and to start the auction at Lot 1 is the William Lyons-Wilson Still Life with White Gourd and Blue Stocking. Lyons-Wilson was a popular teacher at Blundells School in Tiverton into the 1960s, in all there are five pictures by the artist, and this still life is estimated at £150-250*.

Lot 171 are three James Powell Drunken Bricklayer vases in kingfisher blue, meadow green and tangerine colours with an estimate of £500-700* and the studio pottery covers a range of styles and forms with an emphasis on British potters like Lot 181 the ‘Split Seed Pods’, estimated at £250-350*, by Allan Wallwork who was born in 1931.

The furniture includes a mix from practical and useful to, ‘decorative and interesting’. Among the former are the fine pair of maple and cherrywood armoires, lot 379, estimate at £800-1200* and perhaps in the latter is lot 355, a pair of coloured plastic and metal ‘shell’ armchairs, by Herman Miller after designs by Charles and Ray Eames, with an estimate of £100-200*.
