Cornish artworks will be headlining local auction

-

THE team at Plymouth Auction Rooms are counting down to a major sale of art, jewellery and watches later this month. Auctioneer Paul Keen enthuses “our art sale has a real mix of collectable contemporary art with some great Cornish paintings”.

The 220 lot art auction is part one of a special anniversary two day auction to celebrate the 30 year anniversary of the company.

Three paintings with a real taste of Cornwall include a charming 1970s oil of Port Isaac by Jeremy King (1933-2020). He studied at Lancaster and Morecambe College of Art, and taught art and pottery. In 1976 Jeremy moved to Port Isaac with his wife Brenda and then St. Ives. He has exhibited work at the Royal Academy and within the Tate print collection. The colours and tones of the painting really capture the feel of Cornwall. It measures 29cm x 44cm and carries an attractive estimate of just £150 to £250.

Heading further West to Land’s End is the small cove of Sennen. Artist Bernard Evans (1929-2014) has captured a fabulous busy Summer beach scene in his large oil painting from 2002. Evans was born in Liverpool and was a student at Liverpool College of Art and Camberwell School of Art. He lectured for 20 years before moving to Cornwall. There he and his wife ran Mounts Bay Arts Centre from their house in Newlyn. He exhibited widely and was a member and past chairman of the Newlyn Society of Artists. The painting measures 90cm x 125cm and is expected to sell for up to £2,000.

Finally, off to Mousehole and here we have an important good size painting by Jack Pender (1918-1998) simply titled ‘Three Punts’ dating from 1978. Pender’s home was in Fisherman’s Square, Mousehole. The painting was the main artwork at the exhibition at the Belgrave Gallery London in 1990. It measures 130cm x 104cm and is estimated at £4,000 to £6,000.

All the artworks can be viewed online and at the saleroom. The auction starts at 6pm on Tuesday 27th September at the salerooms in Cattedown, Plymouth. Search for plymouthauctions for more details.
